Buying a car in Mauritius as an expat
Keen to drive on the mauritian roads? Buy a car from a reliable seller, register your vehicle and enjoy the roads.
In Mauritius, driving is on the left. Driving in Mauritius means getting used to the lively way Mauritians drive, especially during rush hour. But once you’ve got the hang of it, discovering the island by car can be a real experience.
Buying a car in Mauritius
It is not advisable to import a car, as the process is complicated and you might see your vehicle held up for several months at the port, during custom clearance.
Acquiring a new car
Buying from a recognised professional will save you the tedious process of registering your vehicle in your name with the state body, the National Land Transport Authority (NTA). The seller will do the legwork for you.
When it comes to buying a new car, all the major brands are represented in Mauritius by dealerships. As well as finding the car of your dreams, you will have the advantage of a warranty and after-sales service.
If you are buying a used car, you will find many dealers specialising in low-mileage imports, particularly from Japan. These professionals will take care of registering your vehicle and guaranteeing an after-sales service.
Be carefull with second-hand car
Buying a second-hand vehicle from a private individual is risky and restrictive. As well as having no guarantee of the condition of the vehicle, you will have to deal with the formalities for changing ownership with the NTA.
To enable you to complete the registration formalities, the previous owner will have to provide you with the roadworthiness certificate, the registration book, two originals of the deed of sale and a "Certificat de Gage" (Pledge Certificate) obtained from the NTA. You must register the deed of sale with the Registrar General’s Department within 15 days of the transaction.
Compulsory "Fitness" roadworthiness tests
All vehicles must undergo a fitness test at a certified centre at a frequency depending on the car’s age. If your vehicle is between 7 and 11 years old, it needs testing every 2 years. For cars aged 11 to 20 years, they require testing annually. And if your vehicle is over 20 years old, it will need a fitness check every 6 months.
Converting your foreign licence into a Mauritian licence
Please note that your foreign licence is only valid for twelve months after you obtain your residence permit. You must therefore apply for a Mauritian driving licence from the Traffic Branch of the Mauritius Police Force. You will be required to furnish both the original and a photocopy of your driving license, passport, residence or work permit, marriage and medical certificates.
