Healthcare in Mauritius, a guide for expatriates

Expatriates in Mauritius can count on strong healthcare infrastructure and professionals. Discover health advices to take care of your health in Mauritius.

When establishing oneself abroad, healthcare becomes a major concern. Mauritius offers quality healthcare infrastructure that meets international standards.

Private clinics, the choice of expatriates

In Mauritius, expatriates have access to a free public healthcare system. However, most of them prefer to turn to private clinics that comply with European standards and offer modern facilities. These clinics generally employ doctors trained abroad or themselves expatriates, able to treat a wide variety of diseases and specialties.

In case of necessary medical evacuation, Reunion Island, with its French hospitals, is only a 45-minute flight away. For advanced treatments, patients often travel to South Africa, Reunion Island, or India.

Major private clinics

Among the main networks of private clinics on the island, C-Care is present with four establishments (C-Care Darné in Floréal, C-Care Wellkin in Moka, C-Care Grand Baie, and C-Care Tamarin) and offers a wide range of medical specialties, from general medicine to pediatrics, dentistry, ophthalmology, gynecology, general surgery, orthopaedics, cardiology and oncology..

Pharmacies and treatments

While Mauritius has a large network of pharmacies offering a wide choice of medications, it is recommended to check the availability of treatments for chronic illnesses in Mauritius. Upon entry into the country, customs may require a medical prescription. Note that some narcotics and analgesics require prior authorization from the Ministry of Health.

Malaria and mosquitoes

Although Mauritius is not affected by malaria, dengue fever can be transmitted by mosquitoes. Hence, it is recommended to enlist the services of a professional to treat your garden, particularly throughout the rainy season.

Vaccinations

The Pasteur Institute recommends vaccination against hepatitis A, B and typhoid for long stays.

Medical insurance

Regarding health insurance, it is recommended to have insurance coverage. You have the choice between a local insurer or broker such as City Brokers, MUA and Sicom or an international insurer offering expatriate insurance. Make sure to inquire about coverage for medical repatriation as well as the healthcare providers affiliated with your insurance.
