Hiring domestic help is a common practice among both expats and Mauritians, whether it’s for cleaning, cooking, or childcare.

If you prefer to recruit without an agency, ask your neighbours and friends for recommendations or check the advertisements in your local shops. This will save on agency fees, but you will need to manage the paperwork for your employee’s registration yourself (an accountancy firm or a human resource outsourcing company can assist you with this):
- Draw up an employment contract
- Register as an employer with the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) to obtain your Employer Registration Number (ERN) and register your employee (EDF form)
- Declare the salary paid each month for the calculation of CSG tax (on your MRA online account or via the MRA Easy mobile application).
Helpers salaries and additional costs
Salaries vary depending on the job, the working hours, the region, and your ability to negotiate. The legal minimum wage for full-time employees in Mauritius is Rs 16,500 per month (45 hours/week) as from 1 January 2024. The minimum hourly rate for part-time workers will increase by 10%. You should also pay a 13th month’s salary before the 25th of December of each year.
If your employee lives more than 3 km away from you, you will also need to provide them with transport or an allowance to cover the cost of a return journey by bus or tram.
