Mauritius has a well-developed road and public transport network, making it easy to travel between the different regions of the island. Easing traffic congestion is one of the current challenges in Mauritius. Thanks to the emergence of soft mobility solutions, Mauritius is in transition and the population is adapting to these new ways of getting around.
Taxis in Mauritius
Mauritian taxis do not use meters, so be sure to ask and negotiate the fare before boarding.
As a guide, a trip from Grand Baie to Port Louis will cost you around Rs1,200 one way and Rs1,600 return. To the airport, expect to pay between Rs1,500 and Rs2,000. To book a taxi for the day, count between Rs2,500 and Rs3,500, depending on where you take it from and your negotiating skills.
For a night out with friends, consider hiring a mini-bus.
Ask any Mauritian friends you meet for taxi contacts. Alternatively, the concierge service at the nearest hotel can put you in touch with a taxi.
Bus & metro in Mauritius
Getting around Mauritius by bus is fairly easy, due to a well-developed network. Although the majority of buses are old and not very comfortable, they are very affordable.
Still in the process of being rolled out, the "Metro Express" tram network currently links Port Louis to Curepipe and Rose Hill to Réduit. Electric and air-conditioned, it runs 7 days a week with trams every 10 minutes from 6 am to 7 pm, and until 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets can be purchased at the station.
