Retirement as an expat in Mauritius
Considering to retire in a tropical island for your golden years? Mauritius offers retired permits to foreign pensioners over 50 years-old.
Mauritius is a leading destination for spending your golden years in the sun, whether for a few months a year or all year round. In addition to its idyllic living environment, the island offers numerous tax advantages for foreign retirees, as well as modern infrastructure and a high-quality healthcare system.
Retiring in Mauritius
There are several ways to enjoy retirement in Mauritius. See our article on residence permits and visas to live in Mauritius.
The residence permit for retired persons applies to foreigners aged over 50 who are able to transfer a minimum of $1,500 a month into a Mauritian account, for a total of at least $18,000 a year over the 10-year period of validity of the permit.
One can also secure a residence permit by investing in a property worth over $200,000 in a PDS project for seniors, or in a property part of a standard IRS, RES, PDS or Smart City plan, worth over $375,000.
Finally, retired persons can opt for a one-year Premium Visa that can be renewed.
The tax advantages of retirement in Mauritius
With a residence permit, you will be exempt from tax on dividends, French IFI tax, property and council tax, as well as inheritance tax. You will only be taxed on your personal and rental income in brackets from 0 to 20 %.
It should be noted that French pensioners can receive their retirement pension in Mauritius.
Active retirement under the sun
