If living near the beach is not your priority, you prefer to reduce your daily commute and live in residential, family-friendly areas, the Centre is an option to consider.
A dynamic urban area
Historically, the Centre has been home to the country’s businesses and shops, as well as the families who work there. This concentration has created an economic and residential corridor stretching from Port Louis to the central plateau, encompassing the towns of Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, Phoenix and Curepipe-Floréal. Farms, sugar cane plantations and the Corps de Garde mountain and the Port Louis-Moka mountain range surround this urban axis.
This region is the most connected on the island, with regular public transport and the development of the MetroExpress linking Curepipe to Port Louis via Quatre Bornes, and an axis stretching towards Moka.
Moka: sustainable urbanisation
Moka is a town planned by developer ENL Property that offers integrated, sustainable urbanisation. In Moka you will feel close to the countryside, with prime residential options, all the modern conveniences, and just 10 km from Port Louis and Ebene Cyber City.
Rose Hill-Beau Bassin: a vibrant residential area
Upmarket residential areas welcome expatriates who appreciate the cultural activities and facilities the city has to offer. The centre is lively during the day, but quieter after 6 pm.
Quatre Bornes: the commercial heart
Further south, you will find Quatre Bornes, with Vacoas and Phoenix just around the corner. More popular, these towns are bustling with life and businesses, and close to the west coast beaches. There are no fewer than five huge shopping centres in the vicinity.
Curepipe-Floréal: enjoy the coolness
In Curepipe, you will enjoy rearly a cooler, albeit humid climate, thanks to the town’s 560-metre altitude. You will be immersed in the authenticity of Mauritius, with shopping centres and various restaurants. Affluent Mauritian families congregate in luxurious estates in areas like Floréal, which is notably surrounded by extensive residential zones.
Leisure activities
At weekends, it is easy to head to other parts of the island for day trips.
Staying in the Centre, you can climb Le Pouce, the mountain that runs alongside Moka, or discover Mauritian cultural heritage in the region’s many colonial houses, tropical gardens and old sugar estates.
In short, choose the Centre if you are looking for:
• Proximity to the business centres of Moka, Ebène and Port Louis
• A more temperate climate
• The comfort of the city during the week, and a variety of weekend getaways
