Regions guides

Why and where to live in the South of Mauritius?

Ongoing developments in the south are transforming the luxuriant region into an attractive place to live for expatriates looking for tranquillity.

The South stretches from Bel Ombre to Mahébourg. Offering a breathtaking diversity of landscapes and one of the most beautiful roads on the island, the sugar-cane fields alternate with lush green countryside, the villages are authentically Mauritian and the beaches are quiet.

As its nickname suggests, the ‘Wild South’ is much less urbanised than the North, West and Centre, but more developed than the East. It will delight expatriates in search of nature and tranquility.

To the south-west: Baie du Cap and Bel Ombre

The south-west is relatively sheltered from the wind and is the wildest part of the South.

Overlooking the fishing boats moored in a splendid lagoon, the Anbalaba residential development has chosen the small fishing village of Baie du Cap to immerse you in the Mauritian soul.

Just a few minutes away is Bel Ombre, a former sugar estate stretching from the mountains to the ocean. Today, several luxury hotels have been developed along its splendid beaches, as well as one of the most exclusive residential estates, Villas Valriche. They border the Heritage Golf Estate, the finest 18-hole course in the Indian Ocean.

Living in Baie du Cap or Bel Ombre means enjoying a peacefull life, surrounded by nature and full of leisure opportunities. Nearby, you will find a handful of small supermarkets and restaurants, as well as spas and fitness centres within the respective programs. Within a roughly thirty-minute journey, you will be able to reach all the amenities, shops, and schools in Tamarin or Curepipe.

South-east: Pointe d’Esny-Blue Bay, Mahébourg and Beau Vallon

Although still very much a wilderness, the South-east is undergoing planned development, combining nature and modernity. Living in the south-east offers direct proximity to the international airport and the opportunity to join the road that links the North to the South, taking you from Pointe d’Esny to Curepipe in around thirty minutes and to Port Louis in an hour.

Pointe d’Esny and Blue Blay are popular holiday destinations for Mauritian families who have their campements here, second homes on the beach.

On the menu: a relaxed and calm atmosphere, far from the tourists. You will enjoy one of the most beautiful lagoons in Mauritius, ideal for sailing, kitesurfing and diving. Pointe d’Esny Le Village has established an exclusive residential complex here. A 9-hole golf course at the Shandrani Hôtel also offers the chance to practise your passion.

A 5-minute drive away is the beautiful historic town and former capital, Mahébourg, where you will find shops, restaurants, and a lively market.

Inland, Gros Bois offers country living in the heart of a rehabilitated sugar estate. Just 15 minutes from Curepipe and 10 minutes from the heavenly beaches of the coast, Savannah’s Smart City is developing: restaurants and shops, sports centres, offices and an international school. The urbanisation is sustainable, to offer you a rural life imbued with calm and history with all the modern comforts.

Choose the South if:
• You are fleeing the crowds and tourists
• You want to experience an authentic Mauritius
• You like varied landscapes, sea and mountains
