Why and where to live in the East of Mauritius?
A genuine haven of peace for those who want to get away from the modern world and get closer to nature: the East is an region to consider.
Calm and peaceful, the East is a genuine haven of peace for those who want to get away from the modern world and get closer to nature. This windswept region offers more pleasant temperatures, particularly in summer.
The east coast features a succession of coves and bays sheltering magnificent white sandy beaches. Small fishing villages give way to luxury hotels and exclusive property developments. In the background are vast plains dedicated to agriculture, mainly sugar cane. The surrounding mountains offer panoramic views to hiking enthusiasts.
A peaceful lifestyle
Although many Mauritians own vacation homes in the region to spend their weekends and holidays, the East remains less frequented, offering a refuge from tourists who typically don’t venture far from their luxury hotels.
The infrastructure in the eastern villages primarily consists of a few restaurants (mostly within hotels and residential complexes), grocery stores and a bakery. In Flacq, the region’s main town, you will find shopping centres and other facilities that cater more to Mauritians than expatriates.
For access to private schools and health centres, you will need to travel to Grand Baie. Allow 30 minutes from Roches Noires.
Living in the East
Roches Noires and Poste Lafayette, to the north-east, are authentic Mauritian villages renowned for their kiteboarding spots. Not far away, the Azuri development offers a residential opportunity for families and retirees looking for tranquillity, while remaining close to Grand Baie.
Further south, Belle Mare is home to one of the island’s most beautiful lagoons, bordered by a white sandy beach that stretches as far as the eye can see. It is the Mecca of luxury hotels.
Flacq is the typically Mauritian eastern town.
Going down the coast, Trou d’Eau Douce, a seaside resort in the heart of a fishing village, hosts the departure point for Ile aux Cerfs.
Nestled amidst nature, Beau Champ is home to the Anahita estate, offering a timeless lifestyle endowed with all the luxuries of an exceptional property programme. Two world-class 18-holes golf courses are sure to delight enthusiasts.
Activities and leisure
